Dried Figs (Anjeer): Health Benefits and the Right Way to Eat Them

1 September 2026

Dried figs (Anjeer) get recommended constantly in Indian households — for bone health, for digestion, for "strength" in the vaguer traditional sense — and for once, the reputation is backed by fairly straightforward nutrition.

Why figs specifically get recommended for bone health

Figs are one of the few fruits — dried or fresh — with a genuinely notable calcium content for a non-dairy food, alongside a meaningful amount of potassium and magnesium, both of which work alongside calcium in bone metabolism rather than in isolation. They're not a replacement for dairy or supplementation if you have an actual deficiency, but as part of a varied diet, they're one of the better plant-based contributors to daily calcium intake.

The fibre content is the other big one

Dried figs carry a substantial amount of both soluble and insoluble fibre, concentrated in the seeds and skin — which is the actual mechanism behind the traditional advice to eat figs for digestion. It isn't folklore; fig fibre content is well-documented, and it's a large part of why 2-3 figs is the commonly recommended serving rather than a larger "more is better" amount, since fibre this concentrated can cause digestive discomfort in excess.

Soaked vs. eaten dry

A lot of traditional and modern nutrition guidance both land on the same recommendation: soak 2-3 dried figs in water overnight and eat them (with or without the soaking water) in the morning, rather than eating them dry straight from the pack. Soaking softens the skin and seeds, makes the natural sugars less concentrated on the palate, and is generally easier on digestion than eating them dry — particularly on an empty stomach.

What to look for when buying

Good dried figs should be soft and slightly tacky to the touch, not rock-hard or overly dry and brittle — that usually signals either an old batch or fruit dried too aggressively. Ours are dried and packed in small batches rather than bulk-stored for long periods, specifically to avoid that.
